We embarked on this pioneering and innovative work since up until today, there has been no such co-storage solution available. The biological material is stored in one place, whilst the related data is stored somewhere else – and on a range of storage mediums, from paper in drawers, hard disks on shelves, various computers and storage devices, and in the cloud, completely disconnected from the biological material itself.
In the digital world, technology is rapidly changing, and to keep data integrity and authenticity over time, and to ensure future availability (e.g. readability of the data) is a big challenge, whilst for biological and genetic material, there are established methods like cryo-preservation that ensure secure preservation of this material over decades and even longer. GeneEver makes sure that the associated data can have the same durability and longevity whilst kept together with the material in e.g. cryogenic tanks or in other storage solutions.
Our solution ensures that the data is protected against any kind of digital threats (e.g. cyberattacks) and data can never be manipulated or deleted. And all this with the lowest carbon footprint possible of any data storage technology.
Based on having experienced that there is a need for such a co-storage and data protection/preservation solution within several gene banks for seeds (e.g., in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault) and living plants, we have now set out to further develop the solution to support the needs within a broader range of biological and genetic material.
GeneEver is founded based on several years of R&D and innovation within the domains of biotechnology and data storage technology and was initially established by the two Norwegian companies Piql (data storage) and Grønn Næringskompetanse (plant biology), to develop and commercialize solutions for the secure, long-term co-storage of biological/genetic material and associated data.
Our vision is to ensure that biological and genetic material with its related data and information stays together and survives the test of time. The data about the material can be viewed to be as important as the material itself, thus, - to make sure it is well protected and properly preserved is of the greatest importance.
